Crypto Casino Glossary
Plain-English definitions for every term you'll encounter at crypto casinos — from provably fair cryptography to bonus wagering maths and regulatory acronyms.
A
AML (Anti-Money Laundering)
regulationLegal requirements that casinos must follow to prevent money laundering. AML compliance is the primary reason casinos request identity documents and proof of funds. Crypto casinos operating under Curaçao licences have lighter AML requirements than MGA or UKGC-licensed operators, which is partly why KYC is often optional at low withdrawal levels.
B
Bankroll
generalThe total amount of money you have set aside specifically for gambling. Proper bankroll management — sizing bets as a small percentage of your total bankroll — is the single most important practice for sustainable gambling. A common guideline is to bet no more than 1-2% of your bankroll on any single game.
BEP-20
cryptoThe token standard for BNB Smart Chain, analogous to ERC-20 on Ethereum. When a casino accepts BNB or says it supports BEP-20 tokens, you should deposit using the BNB Smart Chain network (not the older Binance Chain or BSC). Always verify you are on the correct network before sending.
C
Cashback
bonusA promotion where the casino returns a percentage of your net losses over a specified period (daily, weekly, or monthly). Unlike welcome bonuses, cashback typically has no wagering requirements — the money returned is yours to withdraw immediately. Casinos like Roobet and Shuffle use cashback as their primary promotion model, which many experienced players prefer over high-wagering welcome bonuses.
Client Seed
provably fairIn a provably fair system, the client seed is a random string that you (the player) contribute to the game outcome calculation. By combining your client seed with the casino's server seed, neither party can fully control the result. You can change your client seed at any time, and many experienced players change it regularly to ensure maximum unpredictability. Think of it as your side of a shared coin flip.
Crash (Game)
gamesA provably fair casino original where a multiplier increases from 1× and can "crash" at any point. Players bet before the round and must cash out before the crash to lock in winnings. If you don't cash out before the crash, you lose your bet. Crash games are popular because they combine provably fair mechanics with social elements — most platforms show other players' bets and cashout points in real time.
Curaçao eGaming Licence
regulationThe most common gaming licence among crypto casinos. Issued by the government of Curaçao (a Dutch Caribbean island), it provides a baseline of regulatory oversight at significantly lower cost and compliance burden than MGA or UKGC licences. Critics note that Curaçao licensing provides limited player protection — the regulator rarely intervenes in disputes. However, the licence does require operators to maintain player funds separately and implement basic responsible gambling tools.
D
Dead Spins
bonusFree spins that have no wagering requirements attached. When a casino offers "free spins with no wagering," any winnings from those spins are added directly to your withdrawable balance. These are far more valuable than standard free spins with 30-50× wagering requirements and should be prioritised when evaluating bonus offers.
E
ERC-20
cryptoThe token standard for the Ethereum network. USDT (Tether) and USDC on Ethereum are ERC-20 tokens. When depositing USDT at a casino, you must select the correct network — ERC-20 (Ethereum) typically has higher fees ($2–$15) compared to TRC-20 (Tron, $0.50–$2). Sending ERC-20 tokens to a TRC-20 address (or vice versa) results in permanent loss of funds.
Expected Value (EV)
generalThe average outcome of a bet if repeated infinitely. All casino games have negative EV for the player (that's how casinos profit). A 97% RTP slot has an EV of -3% per spin — for every $100 wagered, you statistically lose $3. Bonus hunting can create positive EV situations if the bonus value exceeds the expected loss from wagering requirements, but this is rare at crypto casinos where wagering is typically 30×-60×.
G
GAMSTOP
regulationThe UK's national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling. When you register with GamStop, you are self-excluded from all UKGC-licensed gambling sites for a minimum of 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. Crucially, GamStop does NOT extend to offshore or unlicensed crypto casinos. Players seeking to self-exclude from crypto gambling must contact each casino directly.
Gas Fee
cryptoThe transaction fee paid to Ethereum miners/validators when making an ETH or ERC-20 token transfer. Gas fees fluctuate with network demand and can range from $1 during quiet periods to $50+ during high congestion. Gas fees are paid by the sender and are separate from any fees charged by the casino or exchange. For small deposits, high gas fees make Ethereum impractical — Litecoin, Solana, or TRON offer far cheaper alternatives.
H
HMAC-SHA-256
provably fairHash-based Message Authentication Code using SHA-256. The most widely used algorithm in provably fair casino systems, employed by Stake, BC.Game, Roobet, and many others. In a provably fair context, the server seed acts as the HMAC key, and the client seed + nonce acts as the message. The output is a 256-bit hash that determines the game result. HMAC provides stronger security than plain SHA-256 concatenation by preventing length-extension attacks.
House Edge
generalThe mathematical advantage that gives the casino a profit over time. Expressed as a percentage, it's the complement of RTP — a game with 97% RTP has a 3% house edge. Provably fair games typically have house edges of 1-4%. The house edge is built into the game mathematics and cannot be overcome through strategy in purely chance-based games (though it can be minimised by playing games with lower house edges).
K
KYC (Know Your Customer)
regulationIdentity verification requirements where casinos request documents to confirm your identity — typically a government-issued ID, proof of address, and sometimes proof of income. KYC triggers vary by casino: some require it from all users (Cloudbet), some make it optional below withdrawal thresholds (Stake, BitStarz), and some waive it entirely (FortuneJack for crypto players). AML regulations technically require KYC, but enforcement at Curaçao-licensed crypto casinos is inconsistent.
M
Max Bet (During Bonus)
bonusThe maximum bet allowed while a bonus is active. Exceeding the max bet during bonus wagering is one of the most common reasons casinos void winnings and confiscate balances. Typically set at $5-$10 per spin or equivalent for slots. Always check the max bet rule before claiming a bonus and set a game limit if possible. This rule applies even if you are not intentionally trying to "abuse" the bonus.
MGA (Malta Gaming Authority)
regulationOne of the most reputable gambling regulators globally. MGA-licensed casinos must meet strict financial, technical, and consumer protection standards. Players have access to a formal dispute resolution process. Very few crypto-native casinos hold MGA licences (BitStarz is a notable exception with a Curaçao + MGA dual licence), as the compliance cost and restrictions on certain crypto practices make MGA licensing less common in the crypto space.
N
Nonce
provably fairIn provably fair systems, the nonce is a counter that increments with each bet made using the same seed pair. Your first bet has nonce 0 (or 1), your second has nonce 1 (or 2), and so on. The nonce prevents the same result from repeating for identical seeds and bets. When you rotate your server seed, the nonce resets. The nonce is essential for verification — you must use the exact nonce for the bet you're verifying.
P
Provably Fair
provably fairA cryptographic system that allows players to independently verify that casino game results were predetermined and not manipulated. Before each bet, the casino commits to a server seed by publishing its hash. After betting, the full server seed is revealed, allowing you to recompute the result using your client seed and nonce. Only possible in crypto casinos — traditional RNG-based casinos cannot offer equivalent transparency. See our complete guide to provably fair gaming.
R
Rakeback
bonusA rebate system where the casino returns a percentage of the commission (rake) collected from your bets. Originally a poker term, rakeback is now used broadly in crypto casinos to describe ongoing cash rebates based on your wagering volume. Unlike bonuses, rakeback typically has no wagering requirements and is paid directly to your withdrawable balance. VIP programmes at crypto casinos are usually structured around rakeback percentages that increase with loyalty level.
RTP (Return to Player)
generalThe percentage of all wagered money that a game returns to players over a large sample of bets. A slot with 96% RTP returns £96 for every £100 wagered on average. RTP is a long-run statistical measure — individual sessions can vary wildly. For provably fair casino originals, the RTP is determined by the house edge in the game algorithm (typically 97-99% for Dice, 96-98% for Crash). For third-party slots, RTP is set by the provider and audited by regulators.
S
Self-Exclusion
regulationA formal request to a casino to block your account for a specified period. Most reputable crypto casinos offer self-exclusion options in account settings or via customer support. Unlike UKGC-licensed casinos (where GamStop provides a single national self-exclusion), crypto casino self-exclusion must be done individually at each platform. If you are struggling with problem gambling, contact GamCare (0808 802 0133) or BeGambleAware for support.
Server Seed
provably fairIn provably fair systems, the server seed is a secret random string generated by the casino before any bets are placed. The casino commits to it by publishing its SHA-256 hash. The actual seed is revealed after you rotate to a new seed pair, allowing you to verify all historical bets. The server seed is the casino's contribution to the game outcome — you cannot change it, but because the hash is published first, the casino cannot change it either without detection.
SHA-256
provably fairSecure Hash Algorithm 256-bit, the same cryptographic function that secures Bitcoin. A one-way function that produces a unique 64-character hex string from any input. In provably fair gambling, SHA-256 is used to hash the server seed into a commitment that is shown to players before the game. It's computationally infeasible to reverse a SHA-256 hash to find the original input, which is why the hash-then-reveal scheme works.
Soft KYC
regulationA lighter version of KYC where casinos request limited verification (email, phone, or basic personal details) without requiring government ID or proof of address. Some crypto casinos implement soft KYC for account registration but waive full KYC for users who deposit and withdraw only in cryptocurrency below certain thresholds. Often triggered by withdrawal amounts or transaction patterns that exceed basic risk parameters.
Stablecoin
cryptoA cryptocurrency pegged to the value of a fiat currency, typically the US dollar. The most common stablecoins at crypto casinos are USDT (Tether) and USDC (USD Coin). Depositing in stablecoins means your casino balance won't fluctuate with crypto market movements — $100 USDT deposited remains worth $100 USDT regardless of what Bitcoin does. Many players prefer stablecoins for casino play to eliminate crypto price risk.
T
TRC-20
cryptoThe token standard for the TRON blockchain, used particularly for USDT transfers. TRC-20 USDT is the most popular casino deposit method for stablecoin users because of its very low fees ($0.50-$2) and fast confirmation times (1-3 minutes). When selecting network for a USDT deposit, TRC-20 is almost always the cheapest option. Warning: do not send TRC-20 tokens to an ERC-20 address — this will result in permanent loss.
V
Variance (Volatility)
gamesHow much game results deviate from the average. High-variance slots rarely pay but award large wins when they do. Low-variance slots pay small amounts frequently. For bonus wagering, low-variance games maximise the chance of completing the wagering requirement (but limit upside). High-variance slots during bonus wagering risk losing everything before requirements are met but offer the chance of landing a big win that easily clears the requirements.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
generalSoftware that routes your internet connection through a server in another country, masking your real location. Some players use VPNs to access crypto casinos that are geo-restricted in their country. This typically violates casino terms of service — if discovered during a KYC check, it can result in account closure and confiscation of winnings. ProofBets does not recommend using VPNs to circumvent geo-restrictions.
W
Wagering Requirement (WR / Playthrough)
bonusThe total amount you must bet before bonus funds become withdrawable. A £100 bonus with 30× wagering requires £3,000 in total bets before you can cash out. Not all games contribute equally — most slots count 100%, table games often count 10-20%, and some games may be excluded entirely. Higher wagering = harder to clear = lower real value. For context: 25-35× is considered player-friendly; 50×+ is extremely difficult to clear profitably.
